Piles – Vases by Sylvie Godel
During her artist in residence in Jingdezhen (China), Sylvie Godel, while walking in the streets, was impressed by the massive amount of porcelain production. There were also discarded stacks of bowls and plates everywhere in the city.
This prompted her to design stacked vases from bowls of different sizes found in the streets or purchased in Jingdezhen markets. The bowls were piled to make plaster molds to slipcast.
“Piles” are a reminder of a tradition and heritage of porcelain art making. Sylvie Godel evokes both the richness of tradition and fragility of ceramics.
